Minimal background is a rule that applies mainly to portraiture. Nothing is more distracting in a portrait than a busy background. When shooting portraits make sure that the background doesn’t have too much going on and/or have a short depth of field (only having a small portion of the image, like the foreground, in focus). This can be be done by having a wide open aperture.
